It’s a dog life – agility and sniffing in fields

What a great doggie day it has been…

This morning I took Purdey (liver & white English Springer Spaniel) to my usual agility training at Patchwork Training, Lavendon, Beds. It’s a lovely field surrounded by horses, birds and an occasional pheasant or peacock. The grass was slightly muddy from overnight rain, but it was dry with a slightly bitter wind.

There were 3 of us training, myself with my Springer, one with a Cocker Spaniel and another with a Border Collie. We started off slowly with a box (for all you agility beginners out there – that is 4 agility jumps positioned in a square.) As Purdey had just got there she wasn’t quite in the agility zone yet, so when I instructed her to go, she unfortunately went straight to the fence of the field to stare at the horses and sniff for pheasants that may have been there previously. I enticed her back and off she went over and around the jumps. I cheered her on and gave her a big hug after followed by a small bit of cheese which always helps to motivate her.

My friends then had their turn, then the instructor set up another route for us to try. This time it was a longer course including going through the tunnel. By this time Purdey was in the agility zone and was totally focused on me, so I said to Marianne, “is it alright if I have a go now because Purdey was in the zone?” I set Purdey up in the start position and said go. I ran around and instructed her where to jump/turn, it was amazing, she did everything right. She had a well deserved hug and bit of cheese. I’m very proud of her, I know that it must be difficult for her, you see she has been taught to hunt/do gundog training since she was born, so doing agility in a field that is covered in exciting game bird smells must be hard.

After an hour of agility training, we came home. I made lunch for my husband and I. Then I thought it was fair to have a little bonding time with my other Springer Spaniel, Murphy. So I took her to the nearby playing field in our village. She was delighted to be there and leaped out of the car. I ran around the field with her, directing her to go left then right. Took her to the outside hedges for sniffing games and ran around trees for her to follow me. When cheese is involved Murphy is very obedient, bless her, so I got her to sit and I ran off and hid behind a tree for her to find me. She loved the time we had on the field, but was getting tired so also pleased to get home and see her daddy and have a huge sleep.

It’s certainly a dogs life and I’m glad to be part of it.

What are they doing now?

I wonder what my 2 cute Springer Spaniels are doing now. Murphy, the black & white one (she’s a girl, I know everyone thinks she is a boy with a name like that – poor thing) anyway she is probably sitting in the lounge on the foot stool that we allow the dogs to go on curled up asleep. My husband should be working from home, so Murphy’s probably asleep, but with one eye open waiting for her Daddy to move and do something exciting. Purdey, the Liver & White one (yes a girl again) on the other hand is either in the lounge at the large glass patio door looking out of the window staring at birds flying about (full on Gun dog, doesn’t miss a trick) OR as she is a Mummy’s girl and suffers from slight Separation Anxiety when I’m not around, might be asleep in the kitchen in front of the lovely warm Aga. I wish I was at home giving them a cuddle. Only 3 hours and 11 minutes, but who’s counting. if you want to see more pictures of these lovely doggies go to my website www.springerloaded.co.uk

It’s a dog life – agility and sniffing in fields

Hi I’m Melody, what is my blog about you might ask? I’m very passionate about my English Springer Spaniels- I have a B&W one and a liver/white one. I have completed the Think Dog! Course by Alpha Education (Sarah Whitehead) and want to follow a more dog related career, working with dogs and talking about dogs. After doing the Think Dog course I have realised that the modern positive way of training your dog is the right way. My blog will follow my career, learning more about modern methods, becoming a Tellington TTouch Practitioner, spreading the word on how this simple massage method can help your dog and create a very valuable bond between you.
Happy reading!
Ps I have also set up a website http://www.springerloaded.co.uk a great website on only modern positive dog related methods plus a online dog shop where I recommend the best books, toys, food and accessories. It’s Springerloaded!
